Outreach

Spring 2022

We hosted a field trip from Berkner High School. The students learned about mechanical engineering and mechanical testing. Our PhD students also shared their works on mechanical and electrical testing of nanomaterials.

Fall 2021-Spring 2022

We mentored two teams in the Young Women in Science and Engineering (YWISE) program. The teams worked on charcaterizing the statistics of fracture in everyday materials, and the elastocalric effect of rubber (NSF Award 2039269). This latter team won 2nd place in the competition. Congrats!

Fall 2020-Spring 2021

We mentored one team in the Young Women in Science and Engineering (YWISE) program. The team worked on an automatic system to desinfect door knobs. Leah Sandoval, an ME undergrad working with us and the team won the Best Mentor Award. Congrats!

Summer 2019

We hosted 3 undergraduate researchers this summer.

Thien Nguyen from UTD, worked on microfluidic patterning of nanowires, as part of our work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number #1807686.

Goretti Torres worked on rotary jet spinning of nanofibers, as part of the UT Dallas – Mexico Research Summer Program.

Ben Medeiros from UTD, worked on COMSOL simulations of nanowires.

Summer 2018

As part of our NSF funding, we hosted Ruth Bennett, a rising Sophomore in the Mechanical Engineering Department, and a member of the UTD Honors College, as an undergrad researcher. She worked on bubble rafts as models to visualize the behavior of twinned structures, in particular penta-twinned nanowires. This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number #1807686 .
