WHAT DO SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL ATTENTION LOOK LIKE?
Video Examples of Social Communication
Some examples of social attention and communication challenges include:
- Limited Engagement Using Eye Gaze While Communicating: A child may struggle to turn towards a caregiver and make eye contact to check in or engage while communicating, which is an important part of social interaction.
- Difficulty Sharing Interests: A child may not point at something and look back at the parent to ensure they are also noticing it, which means they might not be sharing their interests in objects or events.
- Challenges in Taking Turns During Communication: A child may not take turns or with the caregiver with words or sounds. This back-and-forth exchange is key to social communication and interaction.
- Preference for Playing Alone: The child may prefer to play by themselves rather than engage in shared activities with others.
- Lack of Response to Their Name: The child may not consistently respond when their name is called, which can indicate challenges in social communication.
