Jicamarca

The Jicamarca Radio Observatory (JRO) is a facility of the Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) located near Lima, Peru. JRO is the main provider of ground-based radar observations of the geospace environment at low latitudes.

With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), UTD is coordinating an expansion of the observational capabilities of Jicamarca.

The project will provide multistatic radar capabilities to the Jicamarca radar. The augmentation will allow better observations with benefits to many research areas including, but not limited to, space weather, fundamental ionospheric physics, meteor science and studies of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) dynamics.

The project is only possible due to an international collaboration involving the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP), Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), Cornell University, Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Germany and the US Air Force Research Lab (AFRL).
