Education

The Permian Basin Research Lab is committed to advancing the understanding of all geologic aspects of the Permian Basin of west Texas and SE New Mexico. Our primary efforts are focused on student education and research, along with organizing workshops and conferences on the Permian Basin and producing videos about it.  At the Department of Geosciences at UTD, we teach a Graduate-level course entitled “GEOS 5V08.028 Geology of the Permian Basin,” which provides students with comprehensive information on the structural and stratigraphic framework of the Permian Basin, geophysical setting, and petroleum systems of the Permian Basin.  The students then select a topic for a series of research presentations culminating in a term paper.

We offer materials in the form of illustrations and graphics summarizing the paleogeographic, tectonic, and stratigraphic history of the basin to enhance student learning.  These products may be useful to other researchers and to companies who are active within the basin.  We would be happy to discuss with you how we could adapt our educational materials for your specific needs.

Our emphasis is on making the results of our work open and available to all interested parties, from the general public to students at all levels to industry and government.

Our efforts to carry out this mission strengthen four themes of the UTD Strategic Plan, including 1) Attract talent; 2) Enrich the student experience; 4) Advance research; 5) Become an economic engine for the region.
