Our post-doctoral research fellow, Kimaya Sarmukadam, presented a research poster on “The relationship of lesion location, resting-state EEG and aphasia severity in post-stroke aphasia” at Discover UofSC 2022 in Columbia, SC. Dr. Sarmukadam investigates the relationship between brain oscillations in the resting state and speech-language impairment in individuals with post-stroke aphasia. Preliminary findings from this line of research demonstrate the potential for identifying specific neural oscillatory components and further exploring the relationship between rsEEG, lesion location, and behavioral measures of aphasia severity to improve individualized treatment for participants with post-stroke aphasia.

Our doctoral student, Stacey Sangtian, was selected for a 2020 Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) Student Fellowship Award. Individuals who receive this award must be full-time speech-language pathology students specializing in clinical neurologically based communication disorders and sciences courses. The 2020 Annual Meeting is usually held in San Diego, CA, but this year the conference will be virtual due to COVID-19.

Dr. Behroozmand was awarded the Grant Review and Reviewer Training Travel Grant Award by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in Rockville, MD. This training aims to provide specific instruction on how to effectively review research grants and to conduct reviews of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation research grant applications.

The Speech Neuroscience Lab at the University of South Carolina welcomes Stacey Sangtian as a new PhD student. Student Stacey Sangtian is an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist who earned her B.S. from the College of Charleston and her M.S.P. from the University of South Carolina. During her master’s, Stacey was the recipient of an ASHA SPARC Award, the MSP Outstanding Student Award in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and was selected to participate in the ASHA Minority Student Leadership Program. As the new doctoral student, Stacey’s research is working toward understanding the brain mechanisms of speech motor control and their impairment in patients with post-stroke aphasia. Stacey hopes to use her clinical experiences to inform her approach in addressing clinically relevant research questions in the field.

Dr. Behroozmand has been awarded an NIH (NIDCD) K01 grant to study the “sensorimotor processing of auditory feedback in aphasia”. The goal of this research project is to develop a model that uses the biomarkers of auditory feedback processing for probing the integrity of speech sensorimotor mechanism and its deficits in patients with post-stroke aphasia. This model will utilize neuroimaging (MRI) data to identify the patterns of brain damage and diminished structural connectivity within the auditory-motor networks in the left hemisphere that predict impaired sensorimotor processing of speech. The outcome of this translational line of research will advance our understanding of speech mechanisms and will improve diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders in patients with post-stroke aphasia.

Dr. Behroozmand has received the USC ASPIRE grant for a project to study the effects of brain stimulation on speech and hand motor function in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The goal of this project is to assess the effectiveness of non-invasive brain stimulation technology (HD-tDCS) for treatment of speech and hand motor disorders in Parkinson’s disease.

In collaboration with Dr. Jeremy Greenlee (PI) at the University of Iowa, Dr. Behroozmand (co-I) has been awarded an R01 NIH grant to study the “Neural Mechanisms of Vocal Communication in the Human Brain”. The goal of this research project is to provide unique insights into the structure and function of the human sensory-motor network that underlies effective speech communication. This research is a significant contribution to developing novel treatment methods for neurological patients with speech disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, stuttering, aphasia, schizophrenia and autism.

Stacey Sangtian has defended her master’s thesis titled: “Neural and Behavioral Correlates of Planning during Vocal Motor Control”. In her project, Stacey utilized the application of EEG signal recordings from the human brain to identify biomarkers of motor planning in the vocal production system. Her novel project has paved the way toward developing an objective method to study speech motor disorders in patients with neurological impairments such as Parkinson’s disease.

Stacey Sangtian has been named recipients of the 2015 Students Preparing for Academic-Research Careers Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Stacey is a student in the Master of Speech-Language Pathology program, and was one of only 11 awardees chosen from applicants across the United States. She is currently completing her Master’s Thesis project in the Speech Neuroscience Lab under the supervision of Dr. Behroozmand.
