Graduate Students

Dr. Su will be taking doctoral students for Fall 2024. Interested students should contact Dr. Su directly at lei.su@utdallas.edu. You can read more about our PhD program in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) here: Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

We routinely have positions for undergraduate students who are interested in learning more about language development research. Undergraduate students will work closely with graduate students and Dr. Su in a supportive and collegial environment. Current projects include word learning and parent-child interaction in monolingual English-speaking and Spanish-English bilingual children, word learning in autistic children, and narrative sample analysis in Mandarin-English bilingual children. Students will learn to transcribe language samples, run eye-tracking experiments, collect home language samples, and conduct behavioral coding of home language samples and parent-child interaction samples. Students will also develop a basic understanding of the scientific discovery process as part of their lab experience.

Students may volunteer for their first semester in the lab but are strongly encouraged to take Directed Research (SPAU 4V98), Independent Study (SPAU 4V99), or Thesis Research (SPAU 4v97). Students are expected to commit at least 9-10 hours per week for a minimum of 1 year. A longer commitment is preferred and will allow the student to the get the most out of the lab experience (independent project, poster presentations, etc).

Dr. Su can also mentor undergraduate students via the BBS Honors Program. Eligible students are encouraged to review the BBS Honors Program Information and BBS Honors Timeline for more information.

If you are interested in joining the LILAC Lab, you can fill out an application on the Undergrad Research Explorer Portal here. Please list Dr. Pumpki Lei Su as a faculty member you would like to work with and email Dr. Su at lei.su@utdallas.edu once you submitted an application.
