How long will the study take?
Our studies have multiple sessions, ranging from 1 to 10. Each session lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on what works best for you and your child’s schedule. We would like to schedule each session about 1 to 7 days apart.
Can I bring other children?
Yes! We have toys that children can play with. Depending on how many kids tag along, we have a small room and the larger waiting area outside where you can wait while we complete the session with your child.
Where does the study take place?
We have two locations to run the study. Our primary location is in the Callier Center for Communication Disorders in Dallas (1966 Inwood Rd Dallas, TX 75235). Our other location is in Callier Center for Communication Disorders in Richardson (2895 Facilities Way Richardson, TX 75080).
We’ll ask which location is most convenient for you to run the study.
What happens during a visit?
During the first session, we will show you the lab, go over consent with you, and provide a case history (a questionnaire about your child’s language history, daily behavior, etc.) for you to fill out for your child. While you fill out the forms, we will administer some language and cognitive tests to your child to determine if they qualify for the study. For future sessions, your child will wear sensors on their lips/jaw to track their mouth movement while they say made-up words. They may also practice different signs with their hands. We’ll also continue different language and motor testing.
Will I learn anything about my child specifically?
Yes! After we complete the study, we will prepare a free speech, language, and hearing evaluation for your child if you would like one. This evaluation will be sent to you by mail.
How do I participate in your studies?
To participate, you can call us at (972) 883-3052 or email us at languageinmotion@utdallas.edu. Additionally, if you are registered for the Callier Clinical Research Center Registry, we may contact you if you are eligible.
How and when will my family be contacted to participate in a study?
If your child is eligible for one of our studies, you may be contacted by email or phone to discuss your child’s potential participation. If you and your child are interested in participating, we will set up a time that works with your availability to come into the lab.
