BIOL 4704: IMMUNOLOGY LECTURE

CRN #11439: MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS, 2:30-3:45 PM

SPRING SEMESTER

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Immunology course is designed to provide a foundation in the basic concepts and terminology of immunology. Immunity is a double-edged sword that is not only critical for fending off infections, but also crucial in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. This course will examine the integrated molecular and cellular principles that govern immunity as well as the pathogenesis of infectious and inflammatory diseases. It commences with the important components (cells, tissues, antibodies, immunoglobulins) involved in host defense against infectious agents. Introductory lectures serve to describe and differentiate between natural defense (innate) mechanisms and adaptive immunity mediated by functional B and T lymphocytes and their products. Subsequently, cellular interactions, especially the differentiation of helper T cell subsets and the production of relevant cytokines, will be described. This will include the mechanisms of T cell activation and regulation. Finally, clinical immunology will be discussed.

BIOL 4714: IMMUNOLOGY LABORATORY

SECTION 1 (CRN #11440): THURSDAY 1 PM
SECTION 2 (CRN #11441): THURSDAY 9 AM

SPRING SEMESTER

This laboratory course is designed to help students become familiar with and proficient in the performance of protocols in cellular immunology, immunochemistry and clinical serology. These experiments are designed to introduce the student to the fundamentals of laboratory work in the field of immunology. The laboratory experience is designed to closely reflect that of a modern immunology lab, taking into consideration the limitations of time and available state-of- the-art equipment. Students will also have relevant lectures in these topic areas to assist in learning the principles governing each of these important protocols.

COURSE PREREQUISITES: BIOL 2104; BIOL 2134.

COURSE COREQUISITES: BIOL 4704 (IMMUNOLOGY LECTURE).
