Heidi Kane, PhD

DR. HEIDI KANE

Dr. Kane, the director of the Close Relationships and Health Lab, is an assistant professor in psychology at The University of Texas at Dallas. She received her BA in psychology from Rhodes College and her PhD in social psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Following graduate school, Dr. Kane was an NIMH postdoctoral fellow in health psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles. Before coming to UT Dallas, she was a research scientist in the psychology department at Wayne State University in Michigan. See Dr. Kane’s bio on the BBS website.

Doctoral Students

Katie Austin

KATIE AUSTIN

Katie Austin is a 5th year PhD student in the psychological sciences program. She received her BA in psychology from Creighton University in 2017 and her MS in psychological sciences from UTD in 2020. Katie’s research interests center on how social support experiences in close relationships relate to well-being. Her dissertation is examining how affectionate touch is associated with health behavior and coping behavior. 


Denise Williams

DENISE WILLIAMS

Denise Williams, MA is a third-year student in the psychological sciences doctoral program. She completed her master’s at Pepperdine University. Denise is interested in adult attachment and how attachment impacts one’s physical and mental well-being among romantic relationships. She’s also passionate about making academia more inclusive and accessible to traditionally marginalized communities.


PATRICIA M. SANCHEZ

Patricia M. Sanchez is a first-year doctoral student in the psychology program. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in psychological science in the spring of 2021. Patricia’s research interests include the effects that dark personality traits (i.e. narcissism, psychopathy, etc.) and insecure attachment styles can have on intimate relationships and an individual’s overall well-being.

Master’s Students

BRYCE AKINS

Bryce Akins is a second-year student in the psychology master’s program. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in the Fall of 2017 with a BA in psychology. Bryce’s research interest consist of the development of and changes in familial, peer, and romantic relationships; attachment styles; and the impact of stress and trauma on these relationships.


IAN WALKER

Ian Walker is a first-year student in the psychology master’s program. He graduated Cum Laude from The University of Texas at Dallas with a BS in psychology and child learning and development in the Fall of 2019. Ian’s research interests include exercise, stress, sleep, and social support.


SAMI RISHMAWI

Sami Rishmawi is a second-year student in the psychology master’s program. He received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Missouri at Saint Louis. Sami’s research interests are with the psychological processes of mortality.

Zainab Agha

ZAINAB AGHA

Zainab is a 5th year senior graduating in December with my BS in psychology. She is hoping to get her PhD in industrial/organizational psychology. Her goal is to work as an applied IO psychologist in the future.


Fariha Asad

FARIHA ASAD

Fariha Asad is in a post-baccalaureate program at UT Dallas. She has been a research assistant in the lab for a year and plans to work in physical therapy. She is interested in researching data interpretation and links between physical therapy and education.


Kyle Bendiksen

KYLE BENDIKSEN

Kyle Bendiksen is a junior at UT Dallas. He joined the lab in the Summer of 2020. He is majoring in psychology and would like to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology.


AMMAR JAFFERY

Ammar Jaffrey is a senior at UT Dallas. He started attending the lab this January and is on his way to completing his first year in the lab. He is a biology major and is interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare industry.


Malika Kumar

MALIKA KUMAR

Malika Kumar is a junior at UT Dallas. She joined the CRH lab in the spring semester of 2021 and this will be my third semester working as a research assistant. After finishing her psychology degree, she plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology.

Mahi Patel

MAHI PATEL

Mahi Patel is a junior at UTD, this will be her second year in the CRH lab, and her future goal is to attend medical school and work as a physician. 


Tram Pham

TRAM PHAM

Tram Pham is a senior double majoring in psychology and child learning and development. She has been a research assistant at the Close Relationships and Health lab since 2020. She plans to graduate early and take the semester off to travel and apply for graduate schools. Her future goal is to become a psychologist with an emphasis on couples and family systems.

Aditi Sarode is a senior at UT Dallas and joined the lab in the Spring of 2021. She is majoring in biology with a minor in psychology and plans to attend medical school after graduation.
