The OpenLab is a non-profit entity jointly established by the University of Texas at Dallas and a group of optical network equipment vendors and network operators in 2022. The goal of the OpenLab is to contribute to validating interoperability of hardware and software solutions for Open Optical Networks (OON) according to the open specifications published by the Open ROADM Multi-Source Agreement (MSA).


1. OpenLab provides a common secured space for conducting interoperability validation of Open ROADM compliant equipment and software
2. OpenLab will issue validation reports for equipment successfully achieving the required level of interoperability
3. OpenLab continues to contribute and stage public interoperability events and demos at major conferences

OpenLab is operated by OpNeAR.

Goals of the OpenLab

As an independent organization:

  • Contribute to validating interoperability of hardware and software with the open specifications published by the Open ROADM MSA
  • Issue validation reports for equipment successfully achieving the required level of interoperability
  • Provide feedback to Open ROADM MSA based on outcome of interoperability validation experience
  • Organize and stage public demonstrations at:
    • IEEE Super Computing
    • OPTICA OFC
    • Future industry events
