CFP: Womaneuvering for New Art City exhibition, “Mother’s Room,” September 2022

LabSynthE is collecting stories about women’s reproductive health for an online arts exhibition on New Art City.

To participate:

Please record yourself or interview a friend (or your own mother!) and share your audio file in our Google form here (link coming soon).

This project originally began as a discussion of breast feeding in professional and academic spaces; and we are interested in any stories that you have to share on the topic of women’s reproductive health. If you need some help getting started, here is a prompt and a few stories we shared in the lab:

Tell us about a time you experienced something funny/strange/challenging/terrible… that is at the cross-section of women’s health and professional situations:

For instance, a friend of mine did an all day job interview while three months pregnant and had to negotiate nausea (“morning sickness”) throughout the day without letting on that she was pregnant.
OR

For instance, I used to wear double-pads, one on top of the other, so that when I went to change my situation at work, I did not have to carry, in an obvious way, the supplies I needed to and from my office.

OR

For instance, when I was visiting Las Vegas with my partner—during our first few months together—we rode on the escalator behind a woman in white pants who had clearly just started her period. I didn't want to feel embarrassed about it (I shouldn't have!), but I still did.

AND
We encourage participants to interview their mothers!

Who are we?

LabSynthE is a framework for collaboration in the School of Arts, Technology and Emerging Communication at The University of Texas at Dallas. We develop works of art that synthesize electronic and poetic exchanges using emerging media. LabSynthE creates intimate experiences for public participation that translate technological interactions through poetic gestures.
