Lab Mission
The Joshi lab mission is to tap into fundamental scientific mysteries in development and disease, ask bold questions and unravel these mysteries to enable us to tackle current challenges in cancer and regenerative medicine, benefiting science and society.
To achieve our mission, we will:
- Scrutinize the scientific literature, formulate specific objectives to bridge pertinent knowledge gaps, perform meticulous studies and interpret data in an unbiased way to generate meaningful conclusions
- Engage in an open and collegial lab culture through open discussion of research, constructive input and team work to increase productivity
- Embrace diversity and different perspectives to promote inclusion and innovation
- Collaborate across labs, disciplines and institutes to expand the scope of our research and its clinical translation
Mentoring
A rewarding facet of leading a research team is mentoring research staff and trainees. My mentoring philosophy is grounded in providing the necessary resources, training and guidance to my staff and trainees and importantly, fostering problem solving skills and collaboration among them. In my lab, you will be given the independence to drive your own research projects and ask new questions that stem from your findings. You will be given due credit for your lab work whether it be your own research or your contribution to the research of others. We will meet one-on-one regularly to discuss individual projects, hurdles and concerns and weekly lab meetings will offer opportunities for brainstorming and feedback from the whole team. I will support your scientific interests and encourage you in your chosen career development path to promote your success.
Expectations
All members of the lab are expected to have a strong work ethic. Creativity, hard work and persistence are key ingredients to success in the research enterprise. Everyone is expected to be respectful of the values and opinions of others, and to have good lab etiquette. All are required to keep proper documentation and present all lab experiments, data and interpretations consistent with research transparency in one-on-one and group lab meetings. We are to rigorously examine our work before it is sent to peer-reviewed journals. Thus, being open to providing and receiving constructive criticism of the research being undertaken in the lab is critical to realizing the lab mission. Trainees are expected to apply for fellowships, write manuscripts, collaborate and train others. Technicians are expected to monitor lab needs and provide training and assistance in projects.
