Introduction
This white paper is a discussion building on the concept sometimes referred to (informally) as “AI despair”—a sense of anxiety, pessimism, or even hopelessness about the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its impacts on humanity. Our Off Center for Emergence Studies has been deeply invested in its project called Fred the Heretic, or chatgpt modified to include a large data base of all the writings of Fred Turner, a prolific writer over decades,
Over the past decade, this feeling of AI anxiety and despair has arguably been growing in both popular media and scholarly discourse but is under the hood of our team.
The notion of “AI despair” touches upon concerns such as existential risk, job displacement, moral or existential dislocation, and broader societal upheaval.
